Millennium Rally

The new Millennium has started out very well for Renault. Three Renault Clio competed in the Millennium Rally. The Rally began in Las Vegas, U.S.A. on December 27th and ended in Cancun, Mexico on January 6th. The cars competed in the up to 1600 cc class, category "B". No mechanical modifications were allowed to these cars other than installation of a roll cage, but much to their competitor’s surprise they would compete for the overall title as well. The three cars were piloted by our club members Miguel Garza and Sergio Becerril in the #59 car, José Luis Guaguaro and Jesús Domínguez in car #60, Alberto Pedroza and Teresa Vázquez in Car #61. The three little Clio competed against Dodge Neon, Peugeot 406 and 206, Ford Focus, VW Pointer and Beetle, Nissan, BMW, Hyundai, and Toyota.

The event began at the Las Vegas Speedway, and the Renaults quickly moved to the front in the up to 1600 cc class. They would never give up their lead. Along the way car #59 driven by Miguel Garza and Sergio Becerril were involved in a bad crash. After a sleepless night of repairing the car they were able to re-enter the event but it turned out that the motor had also been damaged in the crash and when they re-entered the race it was not long before the motor completely gave out. They were officially out of the event.

Meanwhile, the #61 car of Alberto Pedroza and Teresa Vázquez were dominating the 1600 cc class and starting to pass many of 2000 cc class cars in the standings. In a solid second place, and well ahead of the other cars in their class was the #60 car of José Luis Guaguaro and Jesús Domínguez.

As the race continued the remaining Renault became more dominant. As other cars began to fall out of the event, the #61 Clio of Alberto and Teresa continued their move to the front, and the #60 Clio of José and Jesús weren’t far behind. When the cars reached Cancun, they came across the finish line 2nd and 4th in the overall standings, but finished 1st and 2nd in their class well ahead of third place Peugeot 206.

This was the kind of statement the Renault Team was looking for in their return to the North American racing scene. Hopefully we will see more dominating performances like this as the new millennium continues. One thing is certain; the bar has been raised for the rest of the competitors in the up to 1600cc class. Welcome Back Renault!
